Cimbali Eleva, care and photo essay…

Cimbali Eleva,

Arrived complete but with an incredible patina, a state of dirt never seen on any of the machines I’ve been able to buy so far.

I was inspired by this vision, beyond the scrap metal I had the feeling that there was a soul that told me a story. Prisoner too long captive of a wet and dark cellar she begged me to give her back heat and light.

It had become gray like the concrete of the walls of its prison, its frame was oozing a whitish dust like saltpetre. It had become impossible to recognize the materials of which it is made. Brass, aluminum, steels, stainless steel all had the same earthy appearance as if it were decomposing.

I had to look after her, I reassure her … This is her proud again looking at herself in the mirror …

Zenith Express, from A to Infusia

Zenith Express Infusia.

Long ago that David told me to come and see this machine. “it is so beautiful”, “it looks like an aircraft’s dashboard”, I had to see that.

IMGP6931

I have never found so beautiful previous creations of Francis Ravinetti, Meteor 2nd generation or the Magic did not have a very imaginative design, it was more like a technical object optimized for productivity, soulless without beauty. What happened to our entrepreneur who could suddenly push out such a beautiful object? Both technical and aesthetic?

February 19, 1960, the date of the patent application, one of the first claimants for automatic groups. 4 years after Daniel Jaques Lafitte or Vittorio Cimbali, besides Elektra would have made his first auto group in 1950 even if no patent is findable.

A patent obtained in 1960, and a production very similar to the drawings provided for the application. But a notable difference from the patent, setting on top that would address the assay. Would Zenith Express have had problems in developing its automatic machine? Mrs. Ravinetti seemed hated this machine, it would be responsible for the death of the manufacturer, cost too much for research and development. I‘ll try to get more information from one of my sources in Marseilles but the machine of the photos seems to be of 1974, in any case its heating element, which seems very far from the patent application.

IMGP6909IMGP6927IMGP6912 A comprehensive system for the time, setting the number of doses, the size of these doses. And this system “Infusia”? It regulates the flow passage between two pipes entering and leaving the group, we see the valve on the photo of the group above. Could it be a work water flow control of the large piston that would vary the time of pre-infusion? Infusia” in addition it sounds good, insinuates anyway.

IMGP6918 IMGP6922 Some details that I love, the manometer, an extraordinarily well integrated hot water nozzle, these joysticks that were even not buttons. Would the lever at this point marked the spirits that even in the era of automation manufacturers struggled to break free, as Valente also commanding the coffee brewing with a small lever on the e61 group ?

I love it thank you David for getting me so kindly received, and revealed the machine.

Zenith Express, before BB was…

Zenith Express steam machine

I wait for this since the beginning I collect the Zenith Express brand. I knew Carlo Ravinetti had made some steam express coffee machines before his “Idrocompresso”. But if I had already seen some drawing of water bath percolators in a 1938 French patent :

Brevet Zenith Express

I had never seen any Express machine, even not as a drawing.

Friendly founded for me by my friend Olivier, this is how I received it.

…of girls from East.

Hello,

Found by Vincent, bought and shipped for me by Gábor, here is a beauty that smells good friendship, thank you to both!

Keripar, Hungarian coffee machine Keripar, Hungarian coffee machine Keripar, Hungarian coffee machine, manometer Keripar, Hungarian coffee machine

Gábor explained the origin of Keripar meaning “KEReskedelmi és vendéglatoIPARi in Hungarian, or simply “Trade and Restoration”.

Filling the boiler with a hole at the top and using the funnel supplied by the manufacturer !!!

Keripar, Hungarian coffee machine, manual filling

A most of simple steam wand

Keripar, Hungarian coffee machine

But a group mechanism with locking down position with a beautiful design, beautiful production and beautiful materials. Seems to me more reliable and safer than locking mechanism of Gaggia lever groups.

Keripar, machine a café Hongroise, mécanisme du groupe Keripar, machine a café Hongroise, mécanisme du groupe

An amazing design, under outdated body, and very particular aesthetic of the communist era, hide a heavy steel frame poor quality hand welded. But also a very nice copper boiler, a massive connection of the group and this group also, beautiful workmanship.

Electric heating, a good quality grade pressure-stat. A safety thermostat too, serious design, mostly high grade.

Simple discovery for the moment, but a pleasure nonetheless. I tried to start it but it leaks everywhere … I‘ll talk when I start its restoration.

An Autumn Weekend

Hi,

I bought this one a few months ago. The group had been very damaged by a previous owner. So before going home waiting to be completely redone I fully sanded and polished and made rechrome.

One lent to me now an original tool from Faema to remove the sleeve of the group. So I did, cleaned and reassemble.

Original Faema tool to take Marte group sleeve apart Marte group sleeve Chemise de groupe de Mercurio

I snapped on this machine for its architecture. A group of Mercurio with a horizontal boiler is all new to me. And this coupling of the group to the boiler is so awesome

Chaudière Urania 1ere génération The same boiler as on Faema Marte

I won’t restore it now, I have to finish restoration of the Zenith Express and then to work on Mercurio.  I had this weekend to remove asbestos,  treat rust to stop etc… And in momentum I thought it would be a good idea remove old screws before time makes things worse…

🙂  One is right… still a lot of work…

But now at home and I love it 🙂

Visacrem 2000

As told my friend Vincent of Machines.cafeslevier.free.fr I didn’t post any picture of the lever…. mistake now fixed 😉

Visacrem 2000 expresso Visacrem 2000 coffee

Datera sur Visacrem 2000

Beautiful crema, beautiful aromatic exploration, even if slightly below the Lambro. Nice texture, very nice, even if  a little more hesitant than on the Faema. It is maybe very informative. I’ll have to confirm with more experiments, but the resulting coffee is much akin to what a thermosiphon’s group like e61 can give. Interesting for a group connected to the boiler so that also, conversely, as a thermosiphon group on Faema Lambro is very close for the resulting body of a coupled group.

The rules are made to be contradicted.  ?! 😉
